Tonga's Pohiva confident despite rifts

Despite more internal conflict, Tonga's veteran democracy campaigner, Akilisi Pohiva, says he is confident his Democratic Party will do well in the elections in November.

This comes after two senior members, 'Isileli Pulu and Falisi Tupou, voiced their dissatisfaction at the party selection committee dumping four MPs, including deputy leader, Sitiveni Halapua, last month.

Mr Pohiva has stressed he was not involved in the selection process but says new party members were putting their names forward for selection and they had to be considered.

He also says Dr Halapua was promoting a competing party doctrine.

"It is a pity, the difference between Steven Halapua and myself but we can't afford, at this point in time, to come into the House with two different political doctrines because when we come to formulate policies we have to have only one."
