The Commonwealth Election Commission in the Northern Marianas says a record number of people has registered to vote in this year's general elections.

Its executive director, Robert Guerrero, says 17,071 have registered for the November polls.

Private groups have been beefing up campaigns for young adults to register to vote, separate from the registration drives that the Election Commission has been conducting.

In the 2009 general elections, there were 16,146 registered voters, and during the 2005 general elections, the number was just over 15,000.
