4:56 am on 4 September 2014

The Small Islands Developing States conference in Samoa wraps up this morning with a session on waste management, water and sanitation and food security.

On the panel is the head of the World Meteorological Organisation, Michel Jarrud, and the Director General of the Food and Agricultural Organisation, Jose Graziano da Silva.

Mary Baines is in Apia.

"The United Nations says rapid population growth, increasing urbanisation and lack of financial resources, compounded by climate change, will put pressure on food security, waste management and access to water in the future. More than 60 partnerships have been registered in this area, including between Japan and Pacific governments to develop better waste management systems across the region. Also being launched is 'Organic Islands, Growing Our Future', which aims to improve regional food security and enable farmers to trade locally. 'Pacific Waste Solutions' between Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand and the University of Samoa will partner to research the best ways to turn waste into renewable energy."
