Sport: IRB to monitor players seeking country-switch

10:48 am on 10 September 2014

The International Rugby Board insist they're ready to prevent exploitation of their regulations that could allow a host of players to switch national allegiance in time for the 2016 Olympics.

Changes to eligibility rules mean a player can represent a second country provided they have the correct passport and have not been capped by another team for 18 months.

Just one appearance during the upcoming World Sevens Series would qualify a player eligible to be selected for the Olympics sevens competition as well that nation's 15-a-side team.

A number of high profile players have approached the likes of Samoa, Fiji and Tonga's rugby unions about making a switch.

Manu Samoa coach Steven Betham admits it's a balancing act.

"I don't want to chase players - if they want to commit [then] commit - and some of the players who have been loyal know that. We have spoken about it and we have sort of told them that when it is World Cup year we pick the best. I wanted them to commit before and most of the players that have commited before I don't want them to see me chasing other players and think that they haven't done the job for me, so the door is basically still open for everybody".

IRB chief executive Brett Gosper, says a regulations committee will look at all applications for transfer, and they will act to prevent a flood of players exploiting the regulations outside of the spirit of the law.
