Negotiations continuing for release of Fiji peacekeepers

12:52 pm on 11 September 2014

The Fiji government says it is continuing to support the United Nations in seeking the release of 45 Fiji peacekeepers being held by Syrian rebels.

The Al Nusra Front seized the Fijians in the Golan Heights two weeks ago, demanding that the group be removed from the United Nations terrorism list, be given humanitarian aid and compensation for the killing of some of its fighters.

The Ministry of Information in Suva said in its statement yesterday that an agreement was reached that the peacekeepers would be freed unconditionally was made without consultation with the UN.

It says the statement reflected a strong hope they would be returned home safely.

Fiji has said it remains committed to serving with the UN force in the Golan Heights and is ready to replace the 45 men once they are freed.
