Labour MP Damien O'Connor says the Government's contribution to a sports and event centre in memory of those who died at the Pike River mine is "stingy".
The Government has announced that it will contribute $3.5 million towards the cost of the events centre to be built in Greymouth.
Mr O'Connor says it's a good short-term measure but the amount falls short of the "grand assurances" made by the Government at the time of the tragedy late last year.
It's a stingy sum, he says, given what the Government has spent on bailing out investors in South Canterbury Finance and in allowing MediaWorks to pay in instalments for its radio frequencies.
The events centre is estimated to cost $5 million, and Grey district mayor Tony Kokshoorn is confident the community will be able to provide the extra money needed.
He says they're grateful to the Government for its contribution.
As well as commemorating the 29 men who died in explosions at the mine on or around 19 November, 2010, the centre will also be in memory of the victims of past mining accidents.
