Hearing adjourned for two months

The Department of Labour says a court hearing about health and safety charges at the Pike River mine has been adjourned for two months.

The department has charged Pike River Coal, former chief executive Peter Whittall, and Valley Longwall Drilling International after explosions at the mine on 19 November 2010 killed 29 men.

Twenty five charges were laid last November, a year after the disaster.

The department says all charges have been adjourned until 27 March for the initial legal discovery process.

No pleas were entered at at Greymouth District Court on Tuesday and none of the parties charged were present in court. All were represented by their lawyers.

The department says the session was only to set the dates of the next hearing.

Police say they are yet to complete recommendations on separate, possible criminal charges.
