Tirikatene, Turei bills drawn from ballot

Two new bills were drawn from the members' ballot in Parliament on Thursday and will be considered by Parliament.

The first, in the name of Labour MP Rino Tirikatene, amends the Employment Relations Act so that people aged 16 and under who have paid work are regarded as employees, giving them all the rights that go with that status.

The second, in the name of Green co-leader Metiria Turei, broadens the Criminal Proceeds Recovery Act so it applies to casinos.

That would effectively allow the proceeds of crime spent in, and laundered through, casinos to be returned to those from whom they have been stolen or acquired.

The two bills will be debated on an upcoming members' day in Parliament.
