Scorn poured on NZ critics in Doha

9:10 am on 9 December 2012

Climate Change Minister Tim Groser is pouring scorn on critics who awarded New Zealand and Canada the title of Colossal Fossil for their position on the Kyoto protocol.

New Zealand, Canada and Japan opposed an extension of the protocol.

A majority at a UN conference in Doha voted on Saturday to extend the Kyoto Protocol beyond its expiry date this year.

New Zealand's position earned criticism from non-governmental organisations on Friday, but Mr Groser called the award a futile stunt.

He said that on the same day as his staff got a ludicrous award, the World Energy Council told him New Zealand has the sixth most sustainable energy system in the world.

Climate Action Network-International is made up of more than 700 non-governmental organisations.

Green MP Kennedy Graham said the title reflects New Zealand's poor environmental standing.
