Agency against reviewable tenancies

Catholic agency Caritas has told MPs that extending reviewable tenancies to all Housing New Zealand tenants could tear communities apart.

The Social Services Committee is hearing submissions on legislation to reform social housing.

Under the legislation reviewable tenancies, where tenants are regularly assessed as to whether they still have high housing needs, will be extended from about 10,000 tenants to an estimated 53,000.

Caritas coordinator Lisa Beech told the committee on Tuesday that the move would increase transience in schools and communities.

The agency told the committee that state tenants with school-aged children should be excluded from having their tenancies reviewed regularly.
