PM to visit new Australian leader

11:14 pm on 30 September 2013

The Prime Minister, John Key, will travel to Australia on Wednesday to see the new Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.

It will be a one-day trip to Canberra, and Mr Key will be the second foreign leader to meet Mr Abbott in his new role.

Mr Abbott travelled to Indonesia on Monday to meet President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for his first overseas trip since winning the federal election three weeks ago.

Mr Key says New Zealand has forged close bonds with Australia, and he expects to enjoy a strong working relationship with Mr Abbott.

Next week, Mr Key will travel to the APEC Leaders' meeting in Bali, before attending the East Asia Summit in Brunei.
