Shake-up of university and wananga councils proposed

12:15 pm on 2 October 2013

The Government wants to reduce the number of members on the councils that govern universities and wananga.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce has proposed reducing the number of council members from a maximum of 20 to between eight - twelve.

He has also proposed leaving it up to individual institutions to decide if they should reserve places on their councils for staff and students.

Mr Joyce says the changes would make university and wananga councils more effective.

Submissions on the suggested changes close in six weeks.
