Labour proposing community taskforce

5:10 pm on 24 October 2013

The Labour Party says it would establish community task forces to develop new opportunities for skilled workers when massive job losses occur in the regions.

Labour says bringing together the local community, businesses and government would lead to solutions to stop those who lose their jobs from having to leave the area to find work.

Labour leader David Cunliffe says every week businesses in the regions close down, or lay off staff.

He says a lot of workers are forced to leave to find work, leaving those communities hollow.

Mr Cunliffe says the taskforce would include experts from government and industry who would work with the community to create jobs and opportunities to keep those skilled workers in the region.
