Rajen Prasad retiring from politics

2:03 pm on 2 May 2014

Labour list MP Rajen Prasad, the party's immigration spokesperson, is retiring from politics at this year's election.

He says he has decided not to seek a place on the party list.

Mr Prasad said he had s been privileged to have been given the opportunity to represent ethnic communities in general and the Indian community in particular in Parliament.

However, in an interview with Radio New Zealand earlier in the year, he criticised the way MPs from ethnic communities are treated and said Parliament still had a lot of progress to make.

Mr Prasad joins long-serving Labour MP Ross Robertson in announcing he is standing down at the election.

Shane Jones is leaving politics this month and Lianne Dalziel and Charles Chauvel both left Parliament this term.
