Green MP may visit Fiji

2:43 pm on 6 May 2009

Green MP Keith Locke says he fully supports a possible visit to Fiji by the Maori Party, to hear the views of indigenous Fijians first hand.

Mr Locke says he may go himself in the near future, to see if he can help to resolve the current crisis there.

Prime Minister John Key refuses to allow Maori Party leaders to join a Maori delegation to Fiji, but MP Hone Harawira says he may take part.

Mr Key says it's important the Government speaks with one voice on the situation in Fiji and it would be unacceptable for a minister to visit there.

He says a visit by a Government minister could be used by the interim Government in Fiji for propaganda purposes.
