Government defends aid for laid-off workers

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett is defending the Government's assistance package for redundant workers, saying payment levels are on-track.

Some 3945 people have received assistance under the ReStart package, with total payments of $2.7 million having been made.

Labour Party social development spokesperson Annette King says ReStart was held up as a flagship programme to help people during the recession.

She says the Government must be disappointed with the low number of people qualifying for assistance.

But Ms Bennett says ReStart is working well and supporting those who need it.

She says the amount of money being paid out in assistance is about what was expected.
