ETS changes not liked by iwi fishing interests

Iwi fishing interests fear they will be left out of pocket by the Government's revised emission trading scheme.

They say the proposed legislation will lead to increased costs and put them at a disadvantage internationally.

The Finance and Expenditure Select Committee is currently considering legislation amending the scheme.

Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd says the proposed scheme will undermine fishing companies.

Chief executive Jeremy Fleming says New Zealand competes with countries such as China, Russia and Argentina, who have no plans for an emissions trading scheme.

Because New Zealand's exports represent only 2% of the global trade and volume of seafood products, he says it lacks the size and influence to pass on the costs of the scheme.
