Govt criticised over its handling of aged care

Age Concern is accusing two Government Ministers of shortcomings in the handling of their portfolios.

The lobby group has criticised Senior Citizens' Minister, John Carter, over what it says are 10 basic requirements of rest home care that aren't being met adequately.

These include staffing levels, pay rates and qualifications, spot audits, proprietors' behaviour, and other issues the group says result in elder abuse.

Age Concern national president Liz Baxendine says she also wants urgent action from Health Minister Tony Ryall over the scaling back of home-based care services.
