Synthetic marijuana may be on sale - Dunne

The Government says synthetic marijuana may still be on sale in New Zealand, despite a ban on earlier versions known as 'Spice' and 'Dream'.

Associate Minister of Health Peter Dunne has ordered tests on new brands such as 'Spice Gold' and 'Spice Diamond' to see if they also contain the outlawed compounds.

He told Morning Report the law needs to be changed so that new products are tested before they are sold, rather than being pulled from the shelves once they are found to contain banned substances.

Mr Dunne said he is concerned the manufacturer may have simply rebranded the old product, which contained a compound with properties very similar to cannabis.

He expects the results of the testing in about a month.
