No mistake, says Anderton, changing his mind

Progressive Party leader Jim Anderton says it wasn't a mistake for him to say he would be able to remain an MP for a year if elected Mayor of Christchurch next month.

Up until Sunday, ever since announcing his mayoral candidacy, Mr Anderton had said it was more important for him to remain as the MP for Wigram and work out of Wellington, than to be in Christchurch full-time.

But Mr Anderton now says he will quit Parliament if he wins the mayoralty.

Asked if he thought it was a mistake to have earlier said that he could do two jobs, he told Morning Report the situation has been changed by the Canterbury earthquake.
