Cabinet 'still considering paper on Maori spectrum'

6:31 am on 28 November 2010

Communications and Information Technology Minister Steven Joyce says the Cabinet is still considering a paper on recognising Maori interest in the communications spectrum.

Groups with an interest in Maori access to the spectrum met in Wellington on Friday.

Some of those who attended think the paper might have been delayed because of other matters, including the Canterbury earthquake on 4 September, but Mr Joyce says it is working its way through the system.

He says it deals with a complex area and officials and ministers are working hard to get it right.

Groups with an interest in freeing up some frequencies for use by Maori want access to the spectrum so they can use it for things like advancing te reo.

The managing director of the Hastings provider Swift Net, Rei Sciascia, says that using the knowledge from past claims should ensure mistakes are not repeated, because there'll be greater knowledge and understanding.

Mr Sciascia says that enlisting IT experts will help Maori get what they want and need from the spectrum.
