$25 million Treaty settlement signed in Marlborough

The Government has signed a Treaty of Waitangi settlement worth $25 million with Rangitane o Wairau iwi in Marlborough.

The deed of settlement was signed on Saturday at Omaka marae near Blenheim.

The claims of Rangitane relate primarily to the Crown's failure to adequately recognise their customary rights in the pre-1865 purchases of land.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson says an apology was issued along with a substantial cash settlement and various commercial opportunities.

He says the Crown is deeply sorry that its acts and omissions left Rangitane land-less, causing a devastating impact on the economic, social and cultural well-being and development of the iwi.

Mr Finlayson says he expects to sign several more Treaty settlements in the coming weeks.
