Biosecurity bill passes first reading

6:23 am on 11 December 2010

A bill updating the Biosecurity Act has passed its first reading in Parliament as the House continued to sit under urgency.

Biosecurity Minister David Carter says the act needs to be updated to allow the biosecurity system to respond to an increasingly challenging environment.

The bill will now be considered by the Primary Production Select Committee.

MPs are debating a bill which seeks to ban the retail display of tobacco products.

The House rose at midnight and will resume at 9am on Saturday.
