Greens call for better food labelling

6:07 pm on 31 January 2011

The Green Party is urging the Government to take steps to improve food labelling, as recommended in a trans-Tasman review.

The report, prepared for the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council, has 61 recommendations.

They include a voluntary traffic light labelling system indicating how healthy the product is and minimum font sizes to make labels easier to read.

It also recommends mandatory health warnings on alcohol about the risks of drinking while pregnant.

The Green Party says they are common-sense changes that should be adopted by the Government.
