Pike River remarks inappropriate - PM

Prime Minister John Key says comments made by the head of the Council of Trade Unions about the Pike River mine disaster were inappropriate.

CTU president Helen Kelly said in a speech on Sunday that the Government has been portraying companies as generous benefactors to workers, but the mining disaster showed otherwise.

Ms Kelly also asked why Mr Key sat next to Pike River Coal chief executive Peter Whittall at the memorial service for the 29 men who were killed in the mine last November.

Mr Key says the comments are dangerous coming before the Royal Commission into the disaster and churlish because the memorial was a time to grieve not apportion blame.
