ACT has officially selected former Auckland City Mayor John Banks as its candidate in the Epsom electorate.

ACT leader Don Brash made the announcement at the party's offices in Newmarket on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Banks will take over from the party's former leader, Rodney Hide.

President Chris Simmons says the board voted unanimously in support of Mr Banks at a meeting on Saturday morning.

Mr Banks says that if elected to the seat, he would be pressing his case for a place in the cabinet.

He says with 45 years working in business that could possibly involve something to do with commerce.

Dr Brash says he is confident Mr Banks can win the seat.

He also indicated that he is likely to stand for the party in another Auckland seat.
