More legislation to come against tobacco

5:27 am on 15 July 2011

Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia warns there is more legislation to come to help rid New Zealand of tobacco.

Parliament has passed legislation banning the retail display of tobacco products and introducing instant fines for retailers caught selling to under-18s.

Mrs Turia says the passing of the bill is a very clear signal to the tobacco industry of just how serious she is.

She says she is going to continue to press to put legislation in place so there is no tobacco in this country by 2025.

Mrs Turia says plain packaging of tobacco products is the next step.
