Labour and Govt reject inquiry into Hager claims

Labour has joined the Government in rejecting calls for a Parliamentary inquiry into Defence Force actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Other People's Wars by Nicky Hager includes claims the Royal New Zealand Navy and the Air Force were involved in escorting and protecting the international force that invaded Iraq in 2003, despite explicit instructions from the Labour Government at the time to stay out of the conflict.

Labour leader Phil Goff says he has seen no evidence Defence staff acted against his Government's instructions and an inquiry is not needed.

Prime Minister John Key has dismissed calls for a Parliamentary inquiry.

He said on Thursday he does not take the claims seriously and does not see the need for such an inquiry.

But Green MP Keith Locke says the allegations are serious and need to be investigated.

Radio New Zealand's political editor says neither Mr Goff nor Mr Key have read the book.
