Independent CYF complaint system urged

The Social Services Select Committee has recommended the Government investigate establishing an independent complaints mechanism at Child, Youth and Family.

Earlier this year, a petition calling for a complaints system independent of the Ministry of Social Development was referred to the committee which was asked to look at whether such a system should be set up.

Committee chair Katrina Shanks says it found there was a case for the Government to look at setting up an independent system.

At present, Child, Youth and Family has a complaints system which is independent, but still overseen by the chief executive of the ministry.

Ms Shanks says since the current panel is already impartial, it would be fairly easy to split it from the chief executive and demonstrate to the public that the process is fully independent.
