Police say they're confident a wanted parolee remains in the Wellington region, more than 24 hours after he evaded officers in Lower Hutt.
Mathew George Kidman, 31, has been in prison for drugs and firearms offences.
Kidman drove through a routine police checkpoint early on Friday afternoon, but then abandoned his car in which police later found a hammer and several knives.
Inspector Shane Cotter says all police patrols throughout the Wellington region are on alert for Kidman, and officers have on Saturday been visiting the addresses of his known associates.
He says Kidman is considered dangerous and any sightings of him should be reported to the police.
