Opening of new railway line at Manukau

1:33 pm on 4 April 2012

The first new railway line in 82 years in Auckland will be officially opened at midday on Wednesday. It will link Manukau city centre with downtown Auckland.

A 2km spur off the main trunk line is the first new track in Auckland since 1930.

A $100 million underground station has been built by Auckland Transport beneath a new business school for Manukau Institute of Technology.

It is expected to be the second busiest station on the network.

Commuter rail services begin on Sunday week to Manukau, halving the duration of the current 80 minute journey by bus.
