Two men accused of murdering Radio New Zealand journalist Phillip Cottrell have made their first appearance in the Wellington High Court.

Nicho Waipuka and Manuel Robinson were arraigned before Justice Miller on Monday and each pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

The judge remanded Mr Waipuka in custody until the trial begins on 3 December. Bail was continued for Mr Robinson until then.

A pre-trial hearing will take place in July.

Mr Cottrell, 43, was beaten as he walked home from work early on 10 December last year and died in hospital the following day.
