Police in Christchurch believe the bodies have been found of two women who have been missing since Thursday.
Marilyn Zidich, 62, and her daughter, Selina Madden, 35, were reported missing by a family member.
Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Hill says the women's car was found on Monday morning during a foot search in dense scrub below Dyers Pass Road on the Port Hills. It contained two bodies.
The bodies have not yet been formally identified, but are likely to be those of Ms Zidich and Ms Madden.
The deaths will be referred to the Coroner.
