Homicide inquiry begins into Hamilton house fire

10:15 am on 24 August 2012

Police are treating a fatal house fire in Hamilton as a homicide.

Officers believe there were nine people inside the house in Holland Road when the fire began early on Wednesday. All but one managed to escape.

Investigators say a body was found inside the house once the fire was put out and the person's identity is still unknown.

Results of a post-mortem are expected on Friday.

Police are praising the actions of one occupant who went back into the house to rescue two children, aged four and one.

Both were taken to Waikato Hospital suffering burns. The baby was discharged on Thursday, while the young girl is recovering in intensive care.

Meanwhile, police say there is no evidence at present linking the house fire to an attempted arson in Paul Crescent on Thursday.
