A dangerous Taranaki overpass has missed out on getting fixed while a congested bridge in New Plymouth has had money allocated for its improvement.
Taranaki will get $165 million to improve roads in the region as part of the New Zealand Transport Agency's roading investment over the next three years announced on Wednesday.
South Taranaki leaders are furious that the Normanby overbridge near Hawera, the site of many fatalities, has been pushed off the list to be realigned. Instead, it will receive minor safety improvements.
National's Whanganui MP Chester Borrows says the agency promised the region's mayors and MPs that the overbridge was the next in line to be fixed.
However, others are pleased that New Plymouth's Waiwhakaiho bridge on State Highway 3, which has caused gridlock traffic problems for several years, will be fixed.
The bridge has created a bottleneck between the city and the growing suburb of Bell Block.
New Plymouth mayor Harry Duynhoven says the area leading into the bridge gets very congested and he is pleased promised improvements will be made.
