Plan for park on killer's house site closer

The Christchurch City Council is a step closer to purchasing the site of the former home of convicted killer Jason Somerville and turning it into a park.

Somerville was sentenced to life in prison in 2010 for the murder of his wife, Rebecca Somerville, and his neighbour, Tisha Lowry, whose bodies were hidden under the floorboards of the Wainoni house.

The house was demolished after a series of arsons and the land has remained bare.

The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board is recommending the council purchase the land and then consult with the community about what they would like to see happen to it.

Community board chair Linda Stewart says she would like to see the site turned into a park.
