Balclutha pool finally opens, council to review delays

A South Otago council says it will do a full review of what went wrong with the upgrading of a town swimming pool.

Balclutha's Centennial Pool complex is re-opening after being completed nine months late and $500,000 over budget.

The $4 million project carried out by construction firm Lund South was delayed by many problems including the main boiler system, roof and drainage designs.

Clutha District Mayor Bryan Cadogan says the effort has been worth it because the pool is a beautiful facility.

However the council has more work to do in determining where the project went wrong and what could have been done better. "That's a process we'll be going through and I would hope it would be as transparent and open to the public to partake as it can be."

He says the pool will be free to users for the next fortnight to apologise to the community for the delay.
