A Kaikohe man who is on a hunger strike after Work and Income refused him an emergency food grant has set up a fund to help families who have also been turned down.
Sam Kuha has now gone 14 days without food and says he's feeling fine, but a little weaker.
He says his hunger strike is a protest against what he calls the humiliation of repeatedly being sent for budgeting advice, when he's asked for food vouchers.
"The average person who has got a job or got money coming in the bank doesn't realise that our own children are starving, you know they think the Third World is starving, take a look in our own backyard".
Mr Kuha says people have been offering him donations - and he's opened a bank account to be administered by the local food bank - for people who've had the same experience with Work and Income.
He says anyone wanting to help him should donate instead to the Feed the Whanau account at the any BNZ.
