The Government is to spend $4 million on passing lanes for State Highway 2 between Napier and Gisborne.

The areas being considered for work are Kopua Hill and several locations between Lake Tutira and Te Ngaru.

Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee, says there have been concerns about moving freight in and out of Gisborne since storm damage forced the closure of the Napier-Gisborne rail line earlier this year.

The spending is on top of an already announced decision to spend $10 million over three years on improving the condition of State Highway 2.
