Partying students arrested in Canterbury

Updated at 5:00 pm on 12 October 2012

More than 40 university students in Canterbury who have been partying to celebrate an end to the year's lectures have ended up in police cells.

The Lincoln University Garden Party and the University of Canterbury Tea Party have been keeping the police in Christchurch busy since before 8am on Friday.

Senior Sergeant Peter Laloli says police have been warning students in the Riccarton area of the liquor ban that was put in place following earthquakes last year.

Mr Laloli says the majority of arrests have been for breaches of that ban by students making their way between the university event and house parties in the area.

Most of those arrested have been given a warning and released.
