Auckland Mayor Len Brown is insisting the Ports of Auckland and the Maritime Union sort out their differences once and for all.
Their dispute over a collective contract has involved strikes, lock-outs and court action over more than a year.
They have been in mediation with the Employment Relations Authority for the past few months and the organisation is expected to release recommendations to both sides shortly.
In a letter to the company and the union, Mr Brown urged them to accept the suggestions and end the industrial dispute.
He said it's important that Auckland is not disrupted by the conflict over Christmas.
In March, Mr Brown offered to do what he can to help resolve the long running wrangle over a new collective contract.
Ports of Auckland said at that time it was too late for the mayor to be offering to mediate in the dispute.
