Canterbury teen charged over 'fake' identity cards

A North Canterbury teenager will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday charged with forging identity cards.

The male student, 17, was arrested on Friday evening.

Constable Hamish Fair says police became aware someone was manufacturing the cards for sale, after speaking to another teenager caught trying to enter a bar with a fake ID card.

He says police believe there are more fake cards in circulation and anyone who voluntarily hands them to police will not face charges.

But he says those who purchased forged cards will be contacted by police if they are not handed in.

Forgery carries a penalty of up to 10 years' imprisonment.
