Worker fired after Twitter row

7:14 am on 12 December 2012

Auckland Transport says one of its employees has been fired for complaining about a message Twitter from a member of the public criticising the company's parking policy.

Tara Sutherland wrote a scathing tweet from her personal account about Auckland Transport after she received two parking tickets.

An Auckland Transport worker then complained to Ms Sutherland's employer, Telecom, about the message.

Auckland Transport communications manager Sharon Hunter says encroaching into people's lives is unacceptable and the company has apologised to Ms Sutherland. She says the person fired was a contractor.

Employment law specialist Maria Dew says Auckland Transport must have found there were sufficient grounds for dismissal, such as possible breach of privacy or of an employment code of conduct.
