A man is dead after being hit by a taxi on a rural road near Levin.
Police say he was walking west on Hokio Beach Road when he was hit by a taxi around 2.15am on Tuesday. He died at the scene.
The driver of the taxi has minor injuries but did not need to go to hospital and his passenger was not injured.
Police say the road was dimly lit and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing.
An investigation has been launched to find out what caused the crash.
The dead man's name will be released once his next of kin have been told.
