Police link man to car seen near shooting

Police have named a man wanted in connection to a vehicle seen at the time another young man was shot in south-east Auckland overnight.

The 23 year-old victim is in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital, and police say there are grave concerns that he may not survive.

He suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach when he was confronted by someon outside his house on Eastland Road in Flatbush, East Tamaki.

Gareth Heron, 25, is wanted for questioning by the Auckland police team investigating the shooting.

Police say that Mr Heron is known to frequent the Howick, Pakuranga and Flatbush suburbs, and any sightings of him should be reported to the police immediately.

The police say he may be in possesion of a sawn-off rifle and should not be approached.

People who have seen a 1998 dark green Mazda Capella, registration number GKM-946 - which was in the area at the time of the shooting - should also phone police.
