Christchurch police are appealing for witnesses to a road rage attack on a man who suffered head injuries.

Detective Sergeant Mark Worner says the 37-year-old victim was assaulted on Johns Road at Harewood near the Sawyers Arms Road roundabout about 7.45pm on Sunday.

Mr Worner says the driver of a blue Isuzu Bighorn truck left the man with significant head injuries that needed hospital treatment.

The man had parked his green Toyota Granvia stationwagon behind the Isuzu Bighorn and the assault took place on the roadside near the rear of the Bighorn vehicle.

The offender is described as a man of Indian or Indo-Fijian decent, in his early to mid-20s. He is about 186 centimetres tall and weighs about 100 kilograms.
