Christchurch and Waiheke Island fires contained

8:02 pm on 19 January 2013

The Fire Service says it has stopped a fire on the outskirts of Christchurch from spreading any further.

A spokesperson says the fire, near Weedons Ross Road, began at about 3.40pm on Saturday in the same area as a fire that scorched about 100 hectares of grassland and pine plantations eight days ago.

Fourteen fire trucks and four helicopters with monsoon buckets were used to bring the latest fire under control.

A second fire in the area, a four-hectare blaze at Eyrewell Forest on the other side of the Waimakariri River, was contained earlier.

Waiheke Island scrub fire

Meanwhile, on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf, firefighters have put out a scrub fire that began at about 4.20pm on Saturday on the eastern side of Erua Rd.

All of the island's four fire trucks as well as a helicopter were deployed to contain the fire.
