Wellington scrub fire flare-ups extinguished

Wellington fire crews managed to bring two flare-ups at the site of a Happy Valley scrub fire under control on Saturday night.

Six fire crews and a helicopter fought the flames that took hold along the top of the ridge above Happy Valley Road just before 7pm on Saturday.

Fire Service shift manager, Mike Wanoa, says the latest flare-ups were 200 metres from where the original fire began.

Thirty people had to evacuate on Thursday morning when flames came to within 50 metres of their homes.

The incident controller, Jock Darragh, says a scene examination has proved inconclusive and investigators will talk to witnesses to try to establish how the fire started.
