Strict rules for student party

9:21 pm on 7 March 2013

Organisers of an annual student party in Dunedin are introducing strict new rules, in a bid to prove the event can be held safely.

Fifteen people were arrested at the Hyde Street keg party in 2012 and dozens more had to be treated by ambulance officers.

Organisers have agreed to limit numbers to 3500 for this year's party on 13 April.

Otago University Students Association president Francisco Hernandez said Hyde Street would be closed and partygoers would need to show wristbands to be allowed in and out.

Mayor Dave Cull said Dunedin City Council, landlords and emergency services support the changes.
