Christchurch Gondola reopens after two years

11:45 am on 25 March 2013

The Christchurch Gondola reopened on Monday after being closed for more than two years for earthquake damage repair.

The February 2011 earthquake burst sprinkler heads, flooding the gondola with 60,000 litres of water, and made the surrounding Port Hills dangerous with loose rocks.

Managing director Michael Esposito says more than $1 million has been spent on building rock- catching fences and renovating the buildings.

He says about 100 people visited the gondola on Monday morning and he expects about 4000 to visit over the Easter weekend.

Mr Esposito says the gondola is an important attraction in the region and will help to bring tourists back to the city.
